Warning: This podcast contains strong language and adult content

The Polyhedron Collider Cast is back with another episode packed with tabletop gaming chatter.

In this episode, our hosts, Steve, Andy, Sid, and Rory, bring us breaking news that's set to change the game – literally. We're talking about a new sponsorship deal with Kienda that's as exciting for the listeners as it is for the podcast. With a special QR code discount for board game purchases, it's a win-win for everyone involved.

But that's just the beginning. The episode takes a playful turn with discussions ranging from selling body parts for board games (yes, you read that right) to the possibility of wearing sponsored pyjamas.

The meat of the episode, however, lies in the thoughtful and in-depth discussions of two board games that have captured the hosts' attention: 'Expeditions' and 'Scholars of the South Tigris.'

We'll also be answering listener questions, including a trip down memory lane as we attempt to recall the very first games we played with each other. Expect a blend of nostalgia, confusion, and the usual banter as we try to piece together our gaming origins.

The entire Polyhedron Collider crew is back, for what feels like the first time in forever. It does mean we talk about Jon's lack of sleep, but it also means we can have a damn good chat about board games and tabletop RPGs.

We discuss news about the latest adventure for Dungeons and Dragons 5th Edition Rime of the Frostmaiden, and lament the lack of high level campaigns before venturing into the world of video games with Elite Dangerous, Frostpunk and Baldurs Gate 3. With the news of a new battlemap editor in Inkarnate, we discuss the merits and flaws of Inkarnate, Dungeon Painter Studio and Campaign Cartographer.

Sticking with the theme, the Andy and Steve talk about Cartographers: A Roll Player Tale. Andy then has to decide between Roll PLayer Adventures and buying a new kitchen floor before we have a good long chat about our experiences with Star Trek Adventures the Tabletop RPG from Modiphius.

To celebrate the launch of the Kickstarter for Dark Ages, the new game from Adam Kwapiński, designer of Lords of Hellas and Nemesis, we are launching a very special competition in association with our god friends at Board & Dice.

Dark Ages is a historically-based civilization-building game that features an innovative action selection mechanism. As long as your action markers remain on the board, you may be able to gain secondary bonus actions whenever you or another player repeats the action.

While Dark Ages features objectives commonly found in 4X games — encouraging you to explore nearby regions, expand your territory, exploit the resources, and exterminate your opponents — it does so featuring several Euro-centric mechanisms. Collect resources from lands under your control, using them to build up your cities and fortifications. Some building types provide several ways for you to gain important in-game advantages, while others enhance your military strength or simply score you victory points. As you expand your territory, you will lay claim to noble titles, acquire new technologies, and train your military units. Each region and leader offer asymmetrical choices with their unique abilities.

Dark Ages launches on 16th March and you could win yourself a copy. The winner will receive a copy of Dark Ages including all stretch goals, with free worldwide shipping to anywhere except Brazil, Libya, Syria, the Philippines, Reunion and Venezuela. The winner will also be provided with a letter bestowing upon them the title of Champion of the Unified Kingdom.

To win this prize we want you to design a heraldry or coat of arms for Polyhedron Collider. Send that design to us in any format you want, but please send all entry to steve@polyhedroncollider.com

You have until 20 March 2020 to submit your design.

Andy is back and finished his house move, and so we are back in action with 300% more waffle. Today’s episode is brought to you by the letter D, as Andy explores Deep Sea Adventure, Steve becomes a grizzled Detective and Jon gives us an updated on our Dungeons and Dragons campaigns.

Andy is busy moving house, or playing Deep Madness in any empty flat, so it’s just Jon and Steve on this episode and subsequently proceedings are much more relaxed. Pour yourself a drink (we recommend a nice dark beer to sip on) and get cosy as Jon and Steve take you through the latest news, visit Dinosaur Island and delve deep into Dungeons of Plunder.

We also answer questions from the mailbag, which all seem to be directed at Andy – d’oh!

Any other podcast would make a big song and dance about releasing their 50th episode. Not the boys from the PHC, because they weren’t paying attention and didn’t realise they had reached such a prestigious milestone.

Instead they talk about four games that may well make their best of the year lists; Steve gets his arse handed to him by Arkham Horror 3rd Edition, Andy goes into a Deep Madness and Jon tackles Monolith Arena. Andy and Steve then quickly say how much they love Brass (Brarse), while Jon tackles the news and Steve’s delves deep into his sack, mail sack that is.

After a myriad of audio recording problems and Skype snafus we are back with the latest episode of the Polyhedron Collider Cast. Polyhedron Collider proves it is, as always, on the bleeding edge of new releases and the new hotness… by talking about Lords of Waterdeep and Android Netrunner, games that came out about 5 years ago.

We also agree the Echidna Shuffle is a great game, admit that we are terrible at Pandemic Legacy and should never be left in a position of responsibility and get all paranoid over The Thing.

The boys discuss Kickstarter and the effect it’s had on tabletop games. We discuss the best board games we’ve backed, the ones that have been lacklustre and those we regret not backing. Via questions from our listeners we also look at how Kickstarter has effected the gaming industry and muse over if the bubble will burst.

Warning: This podcast contains strong language and adult content.

It’s time to get excited about Essen Spiel and so the boys try and keep it clean and family friendly.  Unfortunately, a request for Polyhedron Collider to review adult products leads to a discussion of said products and things evolve into childish giggling.

We do however get a chance to play ‘game of the year’ contender Clans of Caledonia, dice placement fantasy game Monster-Lands and talk about the Stranger Things inspired two-player card game Inbetween. We also then take our pick of the most interesting games to play and buy at Essen.

The boys then have a good lock chat about the current state of board game reviews and look at ethics, how we approach reviews and the best and worst receptions we have had to a review.

Jon is back! And so Steve and Andy regale him with some more exciting game we played at the UK Games Expo and talk about some 100% fresh board games and tabletop gaming Kickstarters.

We build theme parks, we go to sea and raid as a Viking and then divvy out the spoils of war, go fishing and become estate agents and detectives. We also discuss drinking songs and how pasties are hotter than the core of the Sun.

Sorry for the audio quality in this episode – we have had a myriad of problems throughout.

In a desperate effort to clear the decks before the UK Games Expo, the boys from Polyhedron Collider cast their eye over the latest batch of board games and tabletop Kickstarters.  Steve faces the crushing difficulty and divisive gameplay of Dark Souls and then all three go to war with big mechs and sneaky spies in Farsight. Andy is one with the weather as he moves like the wind in Petrichor before joining Steve on the dungeon crawling of Ravage: Dungeons of Plunder. Finally Steve tries one of the latest Escape the Room games in Exit the Secret Lab.

Steve, Andy, his potty mouth, Jon and his creaky chair have come together for another batch of board gaming chat. In part one of a two parts special (I say special, its more that we waffled for too long and had to chop it down) we go through Andy’s Kickstarter habit, have a discussion on the pronunciation of the word Brass, Nandos and how best to censor Andy.

We also talk about some games, since that’s why we’re here. Andy takes us to Mars, in a Story of Civilisation, Steve ventures through time in TIME Stories Expedition Endurance, Jon is all at sea with Tsuro and we all learn some valuable science from Dr Lewis in Planetarium.

Its time, yet again, for another dose of board gaming chat.  Jon is off biking, or some other strenuous activity that Andy and Steve find far too much like hard work, and so they substitute a brummy for a redkneck as they are joined by James Hudson from Druid City Games.  James tells us all about his new game, The Grimm Forest, and goes into detail about publishing, Kickstarter, distribution and Peppa Pig.

The Grimm Forest launches on Kickstarter on 21st March.

Welcome listeners of illusion to the podcast of confusion. We, Polyhedron Collider, challenge you to the ultimate adventure. The next episode of the podcast is complete, the entrance to the dungeon is open so enter listener.

The Polyhedron Collider Crew party up and head into the dungeon adventure that is the world of board games, card games, roleplaying games and the world of tabletop gaming.  Andy tells us about his experience of Knightmare Live, Steve and Andy explore the kickstarted world of Legends Untold before escaping the locals of Innsmouth in Mansions of Madness and Jon takes us through Dobble Star Wars. We also delve into the mailbag and talk about our pet peeves in gaming, rulebooks and augmented reality and VR.

00:00:00 Intro: Explicit Content, how Apple has got our game and Steve is moving away.

00:02:59 Andy relives a ropey TV show from the 90s, as he talks about Knightmare Live

00:12:03 Andy and Steve delve further into a dungeon with a review of Legends Untold, an adventuring card game on Kickstarter right now. You can go back it at https://www.kickstarter.com/projects/505428038/legends-untold-as-deep-as-an-rpg-as-fast-as-a-card?ref=PolyhedronCollider

00:23:10 A quick shout out to Ominoes, that is also on Kickstarter and every member of the podcast crew loves. Go back it now at https://www.kickstarter.com/projects/258813455/ominoes-the-dice-game-for-everyone?ref=PolyhedronCollider

00:25:23 Andy and Steve both go mad exploring the Cthulhu invested great houses of the Mansions of Madness. They discuss the use of apps in board games and the increasing cost of board games.

The boys also discuss Cthulhu fiction and recommend some Lovecraft stories to get you in the mood. You can download the entire Lovecraft collection for you e-reader over at http://arkhamarchivist.com/free-complete-lovecraft-ebook-nook-kindle/

00:44:59 All three boys have been rather silly and playing some Dobble Star Wars, which we all agree is ‘snap on crack’ and far more fun than it deserves to be.

00:51:15 Jon delves his hand deep into the mailbag and finds some juicy questions to be answered.

00:51:38 What are your pet peeves about gaming?

00:55:57 What makes a good rulebook?

01:00:58 Mars seems to be the most popular theme at the moment, what do we think will be the next big thing?

01:04:35 What are your thoughts on what Fantasy Flight Games might have up their sleeves to replace Games Workshop licenced products?

01:09:31 Do you think augmented reality, or VR, has a place in board games?

We talk about using the Microsoft Hololens for D&D which can be seen here: https://youtu.be/VX9TEADmVQ0

So what is it?

I’ve never seen one before, no one has, but I’m guessing it’s the Polyhedron Collider Cast Episode 14. Every action has an equal and opposite reaction. A black hole sucks time and matter out of the universe, the Polyhedron Collider Cast ejects tabletop gaming chat back into the universe.

So that thing is spuing board game banter back into the universe?

Precisely, the Polyedron Collider crew have played Battlestar Galactica, digressed about Red Dwarf and had a lot of fun with Captain Sonar. They’ve also answered questions from the mailbag about which designers they would like to play with, talk about their D&D characters’ voices and break down their Christmas wish lists.

So what is it?

00.00.00 Intro

00.01.00 Battlestar Galactica

00.08.45 Talkie Toaster and Red Dwarf

00.14.50 Captain Sonar

Questions from the mail bag

00.23.34 Is there someone from the industry you’d like to play against at their own game?

00.25.39 Is Scythe not as good as everyone says it is?

00.26.53 Have you ever been offered to cover a game that is quite literally, complete and utter gash?

00.32.34 We know you like games, but do any of the Polyhedron Collider crew’s other halves get involved in the cardboard arena?

00.38.26 An off topic chat about Dungeons and Dragons

00.40.16 If you were playing roleplaying D&D, do you give your character a voice? And would you do the voice right now on air?

00.43.28 What has made our Christmas Lists?

Just in time to miss Halloween, the boys return for the Polyhedron Collider Cast Episode 13.  We recount our time at AireCon 2016 where we played a whole host of games and took part in our first media panel.

Steve and Jon attempt a séance in Mysterium, Andy becomes blind but unfortunately can still speak as all three take part in the social deduction party game Two Rooms and a Boom, a conversation about one of favourite game Neuroshima Hex leads to a chat about The Edge Dawnfall, Deep Madness and Siege of Citadel Kickstarters, we revisit dreams in Dixit, build up relations with our neighbours in Between Two Cities and attempt to troll Luke Hector from the Broken Meeple in Android Mainframe.

We also dip into the mailbag for some questions about board game expansions, the Asmodee super entity and who we’d like to get onto the show.

We’ve just spent the weekend at AireCon, a gaming convention in Bradford UK. Together with Jay from Breacher18, Luke from the Broken Meeple and Rob from the Cult of the New Podcast we took part in a podcasters panel titled Five Games I Hate But Everyone Else Loves.

Will we hate your favourite game? Does Jon actually hate anything? Is Jay going to punch Luke? All will be revealed.

This is our first media panel, so we apologise for the audio quality.

Many thanks to Jay, Luke, Rob and everyone at Airecon.
